Another batch of reviews straight from my iPod to your eyes. This week there are puzzle apps and apps that make you feel god-like.
Pocket God by Bolt Creative Inc for the iPod Touch ($0.99)
This is a great little game to pass the time. Lots to do and it's always being updated with more content. A real bang for your buck. What is Pocket God? Well imagen that you have control over the life of 6 little natives. You have the freedom to do just about anything to them. Drown them, cover them in flesh eating ants, making them blow up in clouds of dust and ash, throw them in volcanos. The creaters of this app. add more content by putting, "homage," to other games in the app store. There are 3 or 4 mini games within this app. You'll never run out of fun sending this little natives to their deaths (like in the pic above, I vaporized them). The great thing is, when all 6 are dead, you can spawn more in a blink of an eye. I give this app 4 stars out of 5, although there is a lot to do it really can only keep you busy for short periods of time.
Hero of Sparta by Gameloft for iPod Touch/iPad ($1.99/$4.99) Free Lite verson available
Take up arms against the gods! Fight your way as a Spartan through many levels of monster mayham. Along your quest you will upgrade your gear and power to defeat your foes. This game is not meant to pass the time although it does have frequent save points so if you need to put it away, you can. The controls are easy and work much like an old school nintendo controler with a D pad and A B buttons. The storyline isn't rich but it is there and provides continuity to the game. Once you have finished the game you can up the difficulty and eventually you can start the game with your upgraded weapons and gear so you can simply kick ass and take names. I have played this for the touch, the verson of for the ipad seems to be getting bad reviews so you may want to think twice before getting if for your iPad. I give it 4.5 stars out of 5, great game play, decent graphics, easy control scheme.
Mastermind by get app for iPod Touch (free) *currently not available in the U.S. anymore.
Pretty straight forward app. It mastermind, just like the some what popular board game by the same name. This particular verson of the game is not very exciting. I am not sad to see it unavailable in the U.S. This game could be, and the board game is, played with 2 people. However, this verson doesn't have a two player ability. Does have the ability to resume game where you left off if you have to walk away from it. Pretty dull game. I give this app a 1 out of 5 due to lack of two play ability and dull dark interface, don't waste your time.
Words w/ Friends by Newtoy Inc. for iPod Touch/iPad ($2.99/$2.99) *free verson for iPod too but has ads.
If you are a fan of the English language or even if you aren't this game could be for you. Based on Scrabble this game pits you against another player. The beauty of this is that you can play with the person sitting next to you, a friend who owns the game, or a random stranger. The board is easy to see and the interface is smooth and easy to understand. The other nice part about this game is you can take your turn, leave the app or turn off your device, and once the other person has taken their turn you can come back. Games can take place over days or weeks if you want them too. The iPad verson has a lot nicer interface (iPod touch picture above) and there is a chat feature built in to allow you to talk to the other player. Down sides to this app, the paid verson for the iPod touch seems a bit buggy compaired to the other two versons. You are better off getting the free verson for the iPod, however you are bombarded with an ad after every turn you take. The iPad verson has no ads and is very easy to use. Push notifications let you know when it's your turn. I give this game a 4 out of 5, it would get a 5 out of 5 if the paid verson for the touch/phone wasn't so buggy that it almost forces people to play the free verson to be bombarded with ads. Go out an get this one for a fun little time with friends.
Tap Tap Revenge 3 by Tapulous Inc. for iPod Touch (Free)
There are many tap taps out there by this company. There is the Nine Inch Nails, Dave Matthews Band, Weezer, Dance, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Coldplay, and the list goes on. This review will focus on Tap Tap Revenge 3. Although the game play experience is the same from game to game this verson supports multi-player the best. There are solo or two player game modes available but this tap tap focuses on the online vs mode. You join a room and are pitted against other random players in that room. Usually up to about 13 others. The idea of the game is music plays by popular and unknown artists and the player has to tap the circles at the bottom of the screen as the orbs go over the top of them. In other words, a finger verson Rock Band. As you play more you get ranking points and XP. You also earn credits that can be used in the online store to personalize your avatar. You can also buy upgrades with your real hard earned cash to give you in game advantages. Also like Rock Band, you can spend real cash to buy more tracks, however it comes with a lot of tracks available for free. It's a fun game to play when you have no internet but it is even more fun when you connect to play against others online. I give this game a 4 out of 5, game play can be a bit choppy and there seems to be an ever growing number of ads in the game, however these ads are for music or for tap tap itself.
Finally I wanted to bring to your attention an app. that isn't a game at all...
